Hemp Now! Because it doesn't make sense any other way. [Update: Hemporium]

So what do we really know about Hemp? Well personally besides that it is vaguely related to the cannabis plant with its infamous recreational uses, not much else.

But thanks to Wikipedia I now know that despite both plants carrying the same name in their title, that’s where most of the similarities stop with Cannabis sativa (Hemp) containing negligible amounts of the chemical(drug) THC which has given its cousin its notorious reputation amongst lawmen. As one site aptly put it trying to get high off hemp is tantamount to trying to get drunk off non-alcoholic beer.

More importantly than this however I have discovered that this one plant and its constituent components can be used for paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food and fuel. Some of these applications have a limited commercial level of success but it still shows the versatility of this incredible plant. In addition it is one of the fastest growing biomasses known yielding up to 10 times the average tonnage of other large scale agriculture and requires few pesticides and herbicides at worst and can be grown organically at best.

So now we are all sold on this being a great sustainable crop but what is the relevance? How does it affect you? Well at the moment in their infinite wisdom the powers that be in South Africa have growing hemp as illegal despite the multiple industries that would open up through industrial hemp production and the countless jobs that would be created that South Africa so very much needs.

But fear not in the wake of this public sector shortfall a group of private sector folk have stepped in to fill the void and champion the cause.  Leading businesses in the local Hemp industry;  Hemporium, House of Hemp and Hemptons have all joined forces to create a project where they are looking for you ,the people, to lend your voice to and support for the movement to legalise Hemp in South Africa. All you need to do is go to the www.hempnow.co.za website and sign the petition and you will be part of the group of visionary people looking to bring part of the multi-billion dollar hemp industry to South Africa and thereby bringing houses, jobs and nutrition to many of our citizens who so desperately need it
